WEBSITE
thataeronautsguy.co.ukThe Brief
That Aeronauts Guy documents the history of early aviation — the pilots, engineers, and daredevils who first took to the skies. The site's owner wanted something no aviation history site had done before: to bring these long-dead pioneers back to speak, in their own words, using AI.
The Challenge
Every figure involved died decades ago — some over a century ago. There was no audio, no footage, and in most cases only a handful of surviving photographs to work from. The brief required building a believable, respectful voice for each figure from historical research alone: nationality, upbringing, education, and contemporary accounts of how they actually spoke, translated into a workable AI-voice direction. It also meant navigating real technical hurdles — old photographs frequently failed AI platform moderation checks, requiring careful image restoration and iteration to get right.
What We Did
Researched each figure's life, background, and — where it existed — their own written words (letters, interviews, and contemporary press accounts), to build historically grounded scripts rather than generic biography. Developed detailed voice and accent briefs for each figure, drawing on regional origin, class, education, and documented descriptions of their manner and personality — not just 'person from Country X.' Restored and prepared archival photographs for use as AI video sources, including removing period markings and signatures while preserving image authenticity. Solved recurring AI-platform content moderation issues around historical military imagery through iterative testing and successful appeals. Designed the page itself — including naming, structure, and short biographies for each figure — and wrote the ethical disclaimer framework needed to clearly label the content as an AI recreation, not a real recording.
The Result
A page of short AI-voiced videos bringing real historical aviators — including WWI aces from three different nations — back to speak for the first time in over a hundred years, each grounded in genuine biographical and documentary research rather than guesswork.
